Some of the photographs are a little dark: the school is now using the solar
system we have provided and are able to assist evening classes!
The grand opening of the Victor Rakus building was a jubilant affair with
750 of the local community in attendance. We had a member
of the government from Kampala and the chief of education, and many other
signatories from various religious denominations. Very long speeches,
but wonderful dancing and singing.
Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Rakus, all had a feast of meat, goat, chicken,
matoki, rice and vegetable assortment. Starting with the children P1
thru P6, then guests, parents and people from the surrounding areas, the food
was served. A long hot two and a half hours later the ceremony began. This
was a very special day enjoyed by all and I have since heard this will
be a talking point for a long time to come.
We have sent more money to pay for 2 small rooms which will be added alongside
the Victor Rakus building, one a room for the headmaster and another for administration.
We also have had some money from the sheltered housing
residents at Queens Park Gardens who are all pensioners from Nairn
and a donation from ERS
at Bishopbriggs and this was used to purchase a printing machine.
The work is now ongoing to raise funds for the next phase: solar panels
and boarding accommodation for orphans and disadvantaged children.
Thanks to the generosity of the donations, work has progress by leaps and
bounds. The Victor Rakus Wing is now completed!
Problems with monies going around the world before landing in the right place!
But it got there and we were able to progress the building of the school.
Thank you all of you bringing your continued support.
Marlyn Summers will be travelling to Uganda with two others for the oficial opening of the Victor Rakus Wing. Dr Rakus has generously arranged a big party for the village and the surrounding area; watch this space.
We have also sent £2000 to plaster and cement existing mud buildings as a temporary measure until we can raise sufficient funds to re build.
We now have a roof on the school! We are very pleased with the progress, slow but sure.
The next project is to cement floors and plaster walls of existing building,
as we have now raised enough funding for this to go ahead.
The photo on the right was taken in May 2007. You can see the excellent progress of which we are proud and grateful to our sponsors for making it possible. The walls stand proudly out of the ground and are soon ready to start receiving the roof.
Watch this space.
