Bunono Primary School

Our project, undertaken by the charity Uganda Aid Person to Person under the direction of Marlyn Sommers and with the help of generous sponsors, is to build a school with several classrooms at Bunono in the Kabale area, in the south west of Uganda (see our location page for more information).

Kabale is a rural area with the school at the centre of three parishes which serves 6050 people.

The children of the area recognise the importance of education, with some brought from as far away as 15 kilometres, some on bicycles and others who walk the long distance to attend class. About half the children are orphans and school fees are a problem. When school is built, children will come from beyond this area.

The school offers basic primary education based on the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Sports. The children are also taught health education through music, dance and drama, e.g. prevention of HIV infections.

At the moment a school hall is being built; it will double as 2 classrooms in the interim, with the goal to eventually have 7 or 8 classrooms. A boarding facility to house about 100 children initially will also be put in place; this will allow them to be kept in a safe environment.

We need the buildings to be solid permanent structures as the existing mud classrooms are in bad repair and crumbling.

Land is for sale and we aim to purchase some within one year funding permitting.
